Terrestrial broadcasting over large geographic areas introduces the complexity of aligning broadcast schedules with regional time zones and local scheduling quirks. One solution to this is to operate multiple feeds to different regions with time delays added to each to account for the local regional time zone. Modern broadcast delay server technologies enable a single feed at the central headend to be recorded and time-shifted as needed before playout to regional channels. Alternatively, the regional headend can perform the time shifting and then playout content at the appropriately scheduled time.
Once a channel has been compressed for playout at the central headend, broadcasters are reluctant to introduce any further processing which might degrade the quality of the content. Solutions which operate completely within the compressed digital video domain to provide recording and time shift capabilities are the obvious choice to provide assured, lossless delayed content delivery under these circumstances.
